Document Summary

Massey, the new immigration and ethnicity in the united states (web) What are the differences between the three immigration periods that massey discusses (the classic era, the long hiatus and the new regime): classic era: a mass of european immigrants stretching from 1901-1930; Long hiatus: limited movement from 1931 - 1970. The new regime: large-scale non-european immigration that began around 1970. Large shifts correspond with us immigration policy changes. Act of 1965 which erased the ban on asian immigration. White americans were losing contact with their ethnic origins. The use of an ethnic label in whites is a way to show how american they are ( country of immigrants/ melting pot) Ethnicity is no longer a threat to national unity amongst whites. European immigration was followed by a long hiatus therefore the number of new immigrants dwindled and there was a generational shift. Hiatus gave america time to undergo assimilation. Long hiatus and economic boom encouraged assimilation.
