(art school was very restricting) Cant have women outdoors painting all day with the same ease and movement as male artists. Still have women gravitating to the same things they were in the 15th century. Don"t use black dont assume that shadows are grey, use blues and purples. Cassat did many portraits of her family members. Frida kahlo: self portraits after her accident. Great variety of textures and variety with exacting detail. Repetition of objects: women come into her studio and pick objects they want out of things she"s already painted and wanting them in their painting. Vanitas: still life portraits, presenting herself to us as a highly successful artist (pearls, garnets) Life is fleeting, don"t be too obsessed with materialism bc ultimately it doesn"t matter.
