Document Summary

We now move from discrete rv"s to continuous ones. Definition: a continuous random variable is one which can take on any value in an interval. It is impossible to list out all of the possible values, so a continuous rv cannot be displayed in a tabular form. The probability function of a continuous rv is called a probability density function (pdf). Definition: the probability density function of a continuous rv is a function such that: f(x) 0 , = 1, p(a x b) = . Note: this is the continuous version of the three axioms of probability. For example, if x = heights of adults, x is a continuous variable, and no matter what your height is, the model will say that the probability of anyone being your height is 0. For the sake of my following argument, suppose that heights are constant (which they are not).
