Suicide- a self-inflicted death in which one makes an intentional, direct and conscious effort to die--- one of the leading causes of death. 4 types of suicidal people (schniedman: death seeker. Clearly intended to end their lives: death initiators. Believe that death is underway, they are speeding up the process: death ignorers trading their life for a better life, death darers. Some want to die, but their behaviors do not guarantee death. Retrospective analysis- researchers piece together data from suicide victims past, study survivors of suicide. 3x as many women attempts, men more successful. Immediate stress- loss of job, loved one, natural disaster. Long term- social isolation, illness, abuse, occupational stress. Mood and though changes increase in sadness, anxiety, anger. Shift in thinking patterns, hopelessness, pessimistic beliefs. Dichotomous thinking- problems in rigid either/or terms. 70% of all suicides, lowers fear, impairs judgements. Psychodynamic- feeling neglected or rejected as a child. Depression and anger at others is redirected at oneself.
