WGS 325 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Childbirth, Postfeminism, Trans Woman
Document Summary
1850s: not considered part of the movement as a black woman. Historically denied equal rights: dichotomy, women are the absence of all things that men are , 2 things, separate and unequal. No distinction between men and women in slavery: ie field work done by both, physical. Spiritual: where did your christ come from , who decided that god made these inequalities. Childbirth: strong, watches children sold into slavery. Asking: people denied the ability to access rights ie women, blacks, poor, not provided, the woman question . Women have the right to occupy (public) space. The government deciding who gets rights: ie women could be arrested but not serve on a jury. Women"s movement pitted against each other: should all women get suffrage, vs black men"s suffrage. Advantages about speaking of the women"s movement in waves: reflects time, building up of waves. Ebbs and flows: need for movement to continue on. Not stopping: works against masculine way of telling history.
