Reconstruction - the era following the civil war

Andrew Johnson- a southerer, loyal to the uio ad did’t support the suessio
• Lincoln picks Johnson, a democrat, as his running mate
• Felt that there needed to be punishment for the rebels, Lincoln didn't

odds with the republican congress (vetoed a lot)
• Republican congress passed a law in order to set a trap for Johnson depicting that

• Johnson impeached (1868) - the constitutional mechanism for trying an official for high
crimes and misdemeanors, was acquitted and served the rest of his term
Ulysses S. Grant- elected following Johnson, uncovered scandals trying to stop them but ended up making
him look bad
• Fought the Klu Klux Klan
• Congress passed a bill called the Klu Klux Act to give Grant ability to fight the Klan with government
forces forcing them underground
Reconstruction Amendments:
13th amendment- abolishes slavery in the US
-Lincoln lived to see it passed but not ratified by the states
14th amendment- all persons born in the US are subject to the jurisdiction of citizens,
-states shall not deny due process or equal protection
15th amendment- the right of the citizens of the US to vote shall not be denied the US or by any
state on account of race, color
Election of 1876 & the end of Reconstruction
• Nominees
o Rutherford B Hayes ( R) - won electoral vote but not popular vote
o Samuel J. Tiden (D)
• Disputed votes in Florida, Louissiana
• Results in the end of the Reconsruction because Democrats wanted them to pull the last of federal
troops out of the South
