• Allies will launch invasion of Italy after
• US Seventh Army (Lead by Patton)
o Entered in Ligata from Mediterranean sea
o Went up to Palerino
o Then across to Italy
• Patton will not be there for the invasion of Italy
Operation Avalanche:
Invasion of Italy
New priorities for the Allies in the invasion of France
• Stalin has been badgering Churchill and Roosevelt to open up a Second western front to invade
France
• Stalin has an ulterior motive because he wants to invade the Baltics
• Allies pull off a deception phase to convince them they are invading the south east of britain
• Put a fake army there

Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower- Supreme allied commander Europe
Operation Overlord D-Day:
• First phase is paratrooper drops
• Invade beaches of Normandy + many others
Eisenhower's "Broad Front" Advance across France
• George Patton is able to beat the Germans with Blitzkrieg tactics
Operation Market Garden
• Paratrooper drops in key cities and bridges in order to open a highway into Germany
• Lead by Bernard Montgomery
• Allies have to pull paratroopers out and campaign is not a success
• Hitler wants to make one last counterattack
Hitler's Ardennes Offensive: The Battle of the Bulge
George S. Patton and Third Army relieve Bastogne
o They turn around to go fight in Bastogne
• Allies are able to close the bulge
The Air War over Germany
• Strategic bombing
o B-17 flying fortresses
o P-51 Mustangs
• Americans choose to bomb by day because they wanted to be as accurate as they could be
o Problem is they are easy to see
• Allies can only have so many fighter escorts and bombers can carry more gas than the fighter
planes therefore the fighters cant follow the bombers all the way into Germany
