Stratification: a system in which categories of people are in a hierarchy. Slavery: a system in which some individuals are owned by others as their property. Slaves globally and historically were not necessarily powerless or poor. Regardless of where you were slavery is a brutal institution. Caste system: a type of closed stratification system in which some people are designated at birth to the lowest of classes based on their parents status. Estate system: a type of closed stratification in which land owners and peasants exist. 3 ways a person can move up in estate system. Commoner getting knighted for a special deed or service. Class system: a type of open stratified system that allows social mobility. You have the ability to move up and down. Society needs to make certain its positions are filled. The more important positions must be filled by the more qualified people.
