Sixtus the fourth"s nephew is named julius ii della rovere was pope for this amount of time: (1503-1513) Best example of high renaissance (1500 -1520) painting. 14th century - proto-renaissance - giotto (in florence/siena) 15th century - early renaissance - masaccio (in florence) 16th century - high renaissance (1500-1520) - leonardo, michelangelo, davinci (in rome) Fresco is hard technique b/c pigments being used are grinding up earth minerals. Needs a good eye b/c colors are different when wet or dry. Need to paint fast so requires a lot of planning. Commision to show the beginning of time from judeo-christian point of view. 9 central scenes portraying scenes from genesis.
