Everything that we need for survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permits fulfilling social, economic and other requirements of present and future generation. International institute for sustainable development definition (best definition): Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. 2 key concepts: the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world"s poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and. Idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment"s ability to meet present and future needs. Vitality of city comes from pedestrians, not cars. Sustainability must incorporate both ecological and social components. Sustainability engages notions of: humane living environment, livable places, communities that offer high quality of life.
