Document Summary

Explicit memory: things you know that you can tell others, splits into episodic and semantic memory. Episodic: autobiographical information as to where and when an even happened, personal experiences. Mainly activates in the hippocampus, then can be stored in the neocortex. Semantic: refers to factual information, or general knowledge. Considered procedural or implicit memory, in that it is something you know and can show by doing. Stored/produced in the striatum, and lesions to it can disrupt procedural memory. Encoding: done by cortical areas, factual memories are processed. Consolidation: stabilizes memory trace after its initial acquisition, gradually converting information from short-term memory into long-term memory. Retrieval: recovering, or re-accessing, information/ a memory from long ltm and temporarily placing it within stm, often needs a retrieval cue. During which the brain repeats neural activity to replicate the event or information. Rehearsal: the role of repetition in the retention of memories.
