Sapir- whorf hypothesis: the way we think about the world is determined by our language. Cultural difference has also been noted in the way in which language is used pragmatically. Differences in social roles of adults and children also influence how language is used. Study the relationship between linguistic behavior and social situation, roles and functions. Linguistic flexibility: ability to communicate in various setting, used in different dialects and communications styles. Verbal- deficit perspective: asserted that anyone who did not use english did not have valid language. Ethnographer: uses participant observation in real-life settings to study culture. Language is acquired in a social setting. Eye contact and shared reference- a basic interaction pattern. Communication loop- a circular or cycle like sharing and exchanging of the roles of speaker and listener. Child directed speech- the specific language that adults use with young children.
