Independence of july 4, 1776: originally, the state consituions were radically democraic, emasculated the execuive branch, reduced or eliminated property requirements for voing, included declaraions of ciizens" rights, guaranteed annual elecions (except for south carolina) States began moving to governments with two bodies-system of checks and balances: they lost their faith in the virtue of the people. They lost faith that virtuous, responsible voters would elect virtuous leaders. States were laboratories of democracy -they experimented with diferent types of consituion. By 1780"s: states reestablished execuive authority and government power. Governor gets elected and is limited to one term-cannot be up for reelecion. Elecions for the legislature occur every year. South carolina had elecions for the legislature every two years. In order to vote, you had to be a white male who pays taxes.
