Culture
A system of values and norms that are shared among a group of people and
that when taken together constitute a design for living
Values
Ex. honesty, loyalty, independence
Norms
Social rules of how one should behave
Types:
o Mores
Violating a more can truly insult
Severe punishment
Ex. racist, sexist, cheating on spouse / partner
o Folkways
Violating is not that big of a deal
Ex. table manners, clothing choices, using wrong you form
Fault Lines
Boundary between incompatible or irreconcilable beliefs, cultures, etc.
o Ex. rural vs urban, democrat vs republican, blue collar vs white collar,
religion vs atheism, race / skin colors
Important in business:
o Conversational no go zones
o Important to know issues you need to be sensitive to in foreign
markets
o Some fault lines could affect employees’ ability tog et along with each
other as much or more than social class
Society + Cultural Connection + Nation State
One country can have many cultures
o Ex. northern and eastern India
Nation states can contain > 1 cultures
A culture can embrace many nations
o Ex. Hispanic culture
Determinants of culture

5. Language
6. Social structure
