Document Summary
Chapter 5- a visit to the physician: diagnoses and enabling technologies. Cyberchondria searching your symptoms online: more junk than information on the internet. Non-contact thermometer (one for your ear: relies on a device called a thermophile to read the infrared radiation emitted by the eardrum (or tympanic membrane) and convert the reading to a temperature. Contact thermometer: probe thermometer, placed in direct contact with tissue, relies on a device called a thermistor, which changes its electrica resistance depending on temperature. Then a second circuit converts the resistance to reading to a temperature. Normal body temp= 98. 6 f or 37 c. Measures the systolic pressure (when the heart contacts) and diastolic pressure (when the heart is filling with blood) At home devices use a piezoelectric sensor (which generates electricity in response to pressure) and a microprocessor. The microprocessor then converts the electrical signal form to pressure values. Normal blood pressure= 117/76 mm of mercury.
