Pain---we tend to avoid it---we avoid anything we think will cause us pain (mental or physical) Selective exposure and media use we will avoid sources that will give us information that conflict with what we believe. People actively seek out media outlets that affirm their beliefs. Use of the internet makes selective exposure a lot easier to accomplish because there are multiple sources to gain information from. More media outlets have led to more extreme irrational beliefs. Selective attention and media use- believing is seeing. You will see in the message what you want to believe. Selective interpretation and media use- same message different interpretations. If two people see/read/hear the same thing they will interpret them differently in accordance to their beliefs. Prior beliefs about the person/people can influence interpretations. We tend to remember parts of something that we want to remember. We remember things the way we want to remember them. We remember media messages that affirm our beliefs.
