NSCI 0817 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Delayed Puberty, Triple X Syndrome, Y Chromosome
Document Summary
There are two strategies for passing on genes to the next generation of a species, sexual and asexual reproduction. One major benefit of sexual reproduction is that the offspring will have more genetic variability. So if one parent has a genetic predisposition to developing a disease, the likelihood of the child developing the same disease will decrease if the other parent does not have the same predisposition. The cons of sexual reproduction include only passing on 50% of your genetic code as opposed to 100% as with asexual reproduction. It is also more time consuming; it takes a long time to find someone you want to have children with. Fertilization, the fusing of the male gamete (sperm) and the female gamete (egg) leads to the production of a bipotential organism, it could become either male or female. The presence of a y chromosome causes the gonads to develop into testes.
