Document Summary

Some variables are manipulated or changed in order to observe the effect of other variables. Other variables are kept constant or do not change. These two conditions are useful in order to keep the differences between the groups compared within reason and of statistical significance. Independent variable (iv) - what is changing or being manipulated. Subject variables are ivs that are not able to be manipulated. Dependent variable (dv) - the variable that is being measured. Control variable (cv) - variables we want to keep constant. Experimental condition - people exposed to the iv. Control condition - people not exposed to the iv. Without control condition, you can t make comparisons. Random condition - people are placed at random within conditions in order to control for potential bias or confounds. Confound - any extraneous explanation for the dv that is not the iv.
