Document Summary

As much as slavery is discussed today, it is often rare to hear about women in slavery. Slavery is taught in almost every school in the united states, starting in elementary school. Women in slavery is an important topic to be studied not just for historical truth, but to learn from these mistakes and advance the current battle for women"s rights. Black women experienced slavery differently than black men, were made genderless under the system of enslavement, and were forced to take on roles that are now stereotyped in the mass media today. Not only did the black women work full time for her owner, but she also was a mother, wife, and homemaker. Even though the oppression of men was equal to the oppression of women, women suffered in different ways than men. A black woman"s sexuality was commonly used against her as she was forced to do many things without consent.
