o Physical Extinction:
1500: world population is about 400 million
1500: the Americas’ population is about 80 million
1492: 16 million Native Americans live in North America
1550: the Americas’ population has gone from 80 million to 10 million in just
50 years
Mexico’s population decreased from 25 million to 1550 to 1 million by 1660
Hispaniola’s population went from 3 million in 1492 to 200 individuals in
1541
North America’s population declined from 16 million in 1492 to 375,000 by
1900
Total Reduction: 97.6%
Almost all the native people were killed in a short amount of time
Main causes of extermination
Wars and massacres
Epidemics
