Race And Diversity
●Identity is the understanding people have about who they are and what is meaningful to
them
●Identity is socially and historically constructed
●Master statuses influence How other people see us and how we see ourselves
●Race and ethnicity are master statuses
●What is race and what is ethnicity
Ethnic Group
●Collectively within a larger society
●Shared cultural practices, historical experiences and symbols
●Common origin ( real or assumed common descent)
●Weber’s definition: “Human groups which cherish a belief in their common origins of
such a kind that it provides a basis for the creation of a community.”
●Self-conscious community (identity)
Nation: Ethnic groups seeking political autonomy generally linked to a territory
●Quebecois: Canada
●Catalan: Spain
●There are clear physical differences between human beings
●Human beings can’t be separated into clear-cut “races”
●There is only one human race to which we all belong
●“Race” socially constructed
●Why has our society constructed race?
