Sociology is interested in how human behavior is shaped by group life. Gender is a key way in which people are ordered. Status: a category or position a person occupies that is a significant determinant of how she or he will be defined and treated. Acquired by achievement, our own efforts, or by ascription, being born to this. Status set: occupying a # of statuses simultaneously. Social stratification- categorizing members by status and then rank these status in some fashion. People on the low end are vulnerable to social stigma, prejudice, and discrimination. Social norms determine the privileges and responsibilities a status posses. Anomie-normlessness because tradition norms have changed and new ones have to be developed. Stereotypes: oversimplified concepts that people who occupy the same status group share traits in common. Sexism: the belief the status of a female is inferior to the status of male. Patriarchy: male dominated social structures leading to the oppression of women.
