Alien vs dreamer- good words vs. bad words: the way that we talk about things, or describe and labor people matters, the way we think about and talk to each other constructs meaning. The historical nature of rhetoric: from ancient greece, socrates-one of the first guys to talk about rhetoric plato--aristotle, socrates hates rhetoric and is interested in philosophy. He thinks those who practice rhetoric are unethical beings: the sophists-group of travelers who go around taking up cases to teach people. They don"t care about ethics, they just care to teach you how to win: socrates doesn"t like writing because it gets missed interpreted- you can"t ask a book a question. , ethos-the ethics of speaking, genres of rhetoric: You are thinking about creating legislation now that will impact the future. Epideictic- genre of the present and the genre of ceremony.
