Tourism: history , definitions and the destination mix. Study objectives, mill, c. 1+strange, et al. , a few confusing terms. Understand consistency and change in travel & tourism over time. Identify the factors responsible for the development of tourism. In pre-industrial times much of the motivation for travel was to develop trade. Three conditions advanced travel in the pre-modern world. (the textbook emphasizes the greeks & romans, but this pattern was true in china, Wealthy people always traveled but there were always relatively few of them. Things changed as the industrial revolution produced a large middle class- people who had discretionary income with which to buy things-including travel. Between the world wars, technology arose that would enable an era of mass production (but the great depression and wwii hindered its application) People traveled for many of the same reasons that they travel today; trade, religion, curiosity, leisure, etc.
