A language is a system of symbols (words or vocabulary) structured by grammar (rules and standards and syntax (patterns in the arrangement of words) common to a community of people. What is the nature of language: words are symbols, words have meanings, words stimulate denotative & connotative meaning. Words represent something else and represent di erent things for di erent people. Bypassing (misunderstanding because of di erent meanings for same word) Concrete: we can see it, touch it, smell it, taste it, or hear it. Abstract: di cult to understand and agree on. Culture consists of the rules, norms, & values of a group of people that have been learned & shaped from one generation to the next. Co-culture is a culture within a culture. The meaning of words can change from culture to culture or co-culture. Symbols derive their meaning from the situation in which they are used.
