Pathogens have special factors that allow them to penetrate this defense. Central nervous system (cns) - brain and spinal cord control center for the body. Peripheral nervous system (pns) - nerves that branch from the cns. Blood brain barrier - cell membranes allow certain substances to pass but restrict others. Initial symptoms of fever, headache, and a stiff neck. Three main bacterial species: haemophilus in uenza gram-negative aerobic bacteria. Occurs mostly in children (6 months to 4 years) Accounts for 45% of bacterial meningitis: neisseria meningitidis. Gram-negative aerobic with a capsule six serotypes associated with the disease. Mortality of 9-12% with antibiotic therapy; 80% without. Vaccination protects against some serotypes: streptococcus pneumonia.
