PSY 2210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Xiphoid Process, Kyphosis, Egophony
Document Summary
Central nervous system controls respiration in the brainstem. 4 functions: supply o2 to body, remove co2, maintain acid-base balance, maintain head exchange. Elastic, spongy cone - shaped, and air lled structures on left and right medulla stinum. Left lungs has 2 lobs - due to heart right lungs has 3 lobes - shorter due to liver. Thorax - divided in anterior, posterior, and lateral sections anterior - imaginary vertical lines, sternal, midclavicular, axillary lines posterior - imaginary vertical lines, vertebral, scapular, posterior axillary lateral - imaginary vertical lines, anterior, posterior, midaxillary. Infants and children: change from intrauterine to extrauterine breathing at birth respiratory development continues throughout childhood with increase in diameter, length, alveoli review immunizations. Pregnant females: muscles and cartilage of ribs relaxing inspiratory capacity increases and expiratory volume decreases total lining capacity remains same mild respiratory alkalosis. 3rd trimester can cause trouble breathing due to increased weight.
