Civil war ensured, and tokugawa ieyasu won and became shogun. The tokugawa takeover began a period of stability and centralization in japan. Daimyo {regional leaders} were split into trusted inner and less trusted outer domains in order to control their loyalty. Outer landowners must live in edo in alternated years. Outer families must live in edo and pseudo hostages of the royal court. Samurai were required to practice traditional skills, and guns were outlawed. Government conducted regular searches to discover and destroy rearms. Museum pieces were kept and bronze cannons were left in place at sea ports.
