African kingdom, the atlantic slave trade and the. States arose in west and central africa in response to the slave trade. Africa is too vast to conquer and rule as one colonial empire. Began as vassals of the empire of mali, converted to islam in the 11th century. Sahel between niger and ethiopia was ruled by a series of islamic city-states, the hausa kingdoms. Portuguese exploration of the african coast grew out of both crusading impulse of the middle ages and the desire for trade: Built trading posts on the west african coast under prince henry the navigator. Historically slavery was common in africa, as in most ancient societies the labor was necessary. Most commonly prisoners of war, working off debt, or it was some sort of punishment. Very rarely did it include your offspring, and usually rise out of slavery once set free. Slaves were just one of the exports of west africa.
