NSG 4403 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Paint Thinner, Etiology, Water–Electrolyte Imbalance
Document Summary
Two million persons suffer burns annually > 1/2 are children. Infants and toddlers = hot water scalds, appliance cords, pulling items off stoves, and maltreatment. Boys age 2-5 = greatest rate of nonfatal burns. Older children - ame related burns (learning to cook) and microwaved foods. <9 years old more re related deaths and injuries due to playing with re. 10-20% of documented cases of child abuse are burn injuries. Infants up to 2 years have an increased mortality rate than older children. Thermal heat (moist or dry) = hot liquids, hot surfaces, and ames. Chemical = acid, cleaning products, chemicals > lye, paint thinner, and gasoline. Irradiation = radiation for x-rays or radiation therapy to treat cancer. Heating agents: dry burn > sunburn, ame burn = 1st degree, moist heat burn (scald) > due to steam/hot liquids = 1st or 2nd degree, contact burns > cigarettes, cooking applications ,etc.
