For most human history of tube feeding (3500 bc), whole food mixtures (btf) provided enteral feeding. Enteral feeding became more successful and widespread in the 1940s-50s with the development of polyurethane tubing and high velocity blenders. Btf prepared by dietitians in hospital kitchens; rns delivered to patient by bolus. Btf displaced in the 1970s with commercial formula that provides a consistent, sterile product delivered by pump less likely to clog tubes. Btf re-emerging today due to patient demands for more natural feeding, treatment for tube feeding intolerance, and bridge to oral feeding. 26 weeks gestation; 1 lb 11 oz; numerous dx including bpd.
