Hearing involves 3 auditory systems: peripheral - sounds to process amplitude- loudness frequency - pitch. Eustachian tube is horizontal in children; which leads to more ear infections. Takes longer to assess sensory input to output between 70s-80s. Otitis media - middle ear infection this can affect children"s" cognitive development, such as speech causes: smoking, babies put in bed with bottle, more infections due to daycares. Info for infants: ear infections, surgeries, exposure to upper respiratory infections, in smoking environment. Ear inspection for child - move down and back ear inspection for adult - move up and back. Do not perform valsalva maneuver if patient has had history of ruptured tympanic membrane. Hearing acuity for newborn - startled to loud noise; moro re ex and startle re ex. 3-4 months - blink re ex when hearing loud noise.
