Definition of anthropology: scientific and humanistic study of the human species: holistic discipline, examine individual cultures in detail. Compare cultures across time and space in terms of specific problems and sets of data. Ethnography- ethnographers live in the community they study and gather data on a specific issue or problem. Ethnology-the practice of comparing 2 or more cultures in terms of ethnographic data. Culture- a society"s shared and socially transmitted ideas, values, practices, and behaviors. Ethnic group- people who publicly identify themselves as a distinct group based on national ancestry, language, religion, or other cultural characteristic. Popular culture- popular culture is grass roots culture that changes very quickly. Traditional culture- traditional culture is grass roots culture that changes slowly. National/official culture- cultural practices created by means of law, the exercise of governmental power and authority, or for ritual occasions. Dominant culture- ethnic subculture used as a standard of preferred behavior in a society with multiple subcultures.
