Hearing- vibration of sound waves on the ear drums; a physiological process. Listening- involves paying close attention and making sense of what we hear. Even when we think we are listening carefully, we usually grasp only 50% of what we hear. In present day, listening is more important than ever. After 24 hours, we only remember 10% of an original message. Speech class lets you work on the art of listening. Comprehensive and critical are used most often with speeches. Take listening seriously- give listening the seriousness it deserves. Be an active listener- giving your undivided attention to the speaker to understand pov. Resist distractions- eliminate all physical and mental distractions. Don"t be diverted by appearance or delivery- set aside judgements and don"t be misled if the speaker is attractive. Suspend judgement- understand their pov, then choose your side. Develop note-taking skills- key word outlines briefly notes a speaker"s main points and supporting evidence in a rough outline form.
