Violent crime is decreasing nationally, since 1993-2011, total violent victimization has decreased 72% and serious violent victimization is down 75% Violent crime peaked in the early to mid 1990"s, some of which can be attributed to crack. There was a small uptick in violent crime in 2010-11. Property crime is also decreasing (1973-2008) consistently but slowly. Age and crime is the relationship about crime that"s most clear and consistent. As people get older, they tend to offend less (inverse relationship) Highest rate is between 15-24 years old. This relationship exists in all forms of reporting (arrest data, self-report data, and victimization data) The age-crime curve is bell-shaped with a more gradual drop as age increases, peaking at 15-17 for property crime and 18-20 for violent crime. Kids 13-18 commit a disproportionate amount of crime. Property crime declines sharply after the peak, violent crime declines more gradually. Rates of drug use peak in the late teens and early 20"s.
