Intimate Partner Violence & Abuse
• IPV = abuse between two people in a close relationship
• Intimate partner:
o Current & former spouses
o Current or former boyfriend/girlfriend
o Couples who live together
Types of IPV
1. Physical Abuse → threatening, trying, or hurting a partner using physical
force
2. Sexual Abuse → threatening or forcing a partner to take part in a sex act
when she or he doesn’t consent
3. Emotional Abuse → aggressive behavior that threatens, monitors, or
controls a partner
Prevalence & Severity of IPV
• Estimates suggest each year, IPV results in:
o 1,200 deaths; 2 million injuries
• Women are much more likely to report serious psychological distress instead
of physical because:
o Afraid of retaliation
o Ashamed
o Feel like no one is going to do anything
Why Do Women Stay?
• Negative self-concept & low self-esteem
• Belief that the abuser will change
• Need for child support
• Shame or guilt
• Blaming themselves
• Fear
• Economic hardship & homelessness
Child Maltreatment
• Child maltreatment = broad range of behaviors that place a child at serious
risk or result in serious harm
