IPV = abuse between two people in a close relationship
Intimate partner:
o Current & former spouses
o Current or former boyfriend/girlfriend
o Couples who live together
Types of IPV
1. Physical Abuse threatening, trying, or hurting a partner using physical
force
2. Sexual Abuse threatening or forcing a partner to take part in a sex act
when she or he doesn’t consent
3. Emotional Abuse aggressive behavior that threatens, monitors, or
controls a partner
Prevalence & Severity of IPV
Estimates suggest each year, IPV results in:
o 1,200 deaths; 2 million injuries
Women are much more likely to report serious psychological distress instead
of physical because:
o Afraid of retaliation
o Ashamed
o Feel like no one is going to do anything
Why Do Women Stay?
Negative self-concept & low self-esteem
Belief that the abuser will change
Need for child support
Shame or guilt
Blaming themselves
Fear
Economic hardship & homelessness
