GEOG 101 Lecture 15: ch. 11
Document Summary
Black lines = travel-times in hours of the tsunami. (1) scoria cone large slopes on the side: big dip at the top. (2) shield volcano lower slopes on the side, but farther spread out. (4) volcanic dome: rounded dome shape, magma develops low. Dome: heat and steam coming out. Eruption column: huge clouds of ash, lava, heat. Released gas propels eruption and forms ash. Dissolved gas held in magma by pressure. More viscous difficult to flow and traps gas. Less viscous flows easier and gas can escape. Grow from the inside as magma is injected into interior of dome. Low areas that collect sediment and ash. A center of volcanic activity thought to be located over a rising mantle plume. Water heated by contact with hot rocks. Waves radiate away from area of seawater displacement: fault movement uplifts or downdrops seafloor, displacing water.
