HLTH 331 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Gastric Acid, Salivary Gland, Vitamin K
Document Summary
Digestion: begins in the mouth- chewing bolus. Esophagus to the stomach- chyme is made in the stomach. The large intestine (colon) the large intestine is approximately 1. 5 m long and consists of the cecum, colon, rectum, and anal tract. The rectum semi solid waste is eliminated from the body. 90% to 97% of food is digested and absorbed most of the unabsorbed material is of plant origin. Salivary glands secrete saliva: salivary amylase breaks down starch. Digestion starts in the mouth: salivary glands secrete saliva, which contains, water, salts, enzymes including salivary amylase, initial breakdown of starches, other nutrients aren"t affected. Digestion in the stomach: gastric juice= water, enzymes (pepsin) and hydrochloric acid, acid prevents bacterial growth, mucus protects the stomach from acid, initial breakdown of protein occurs. Attachment of protein carrier to vitamin b12- intrinsic factor. Digestive enzymes: produced by pancreas and glands in the intestinal wall. Bile: secreted by liver and stored in the gallbladder; emulsifies fats.
