Document Summary
Defining a city: a city is an urban area with a large population and particular administrative, legal, or historical status, large industrialized cities generally have advanced system for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing and transportation and more. Theories/explanations of why cities originated: agricultural surplus, population pressures, trading requirements, defense need, religious causes, organization, technological factors. Note: none of the 7 offer sufficient explanation, but a combination of these factors work together. Trading requirement: emergence of cities a function of long distance trade, need for a system to administer large scale exchange of goods this promotes development of centralized structure. Increase occupational specialization would encourage urban development: critique, cause and effect issue: between trade and urban development! Have sovereignty of all other city surrounding them: ex: monaco, egypt, along nile valley, around 3100bc, agriculture irrigation, short lifespan for cities, cities is abandoned after the death of a pharaoh leader. Perhaps due to loyalty, worshipping the leader.
