Since 1950, the population of people in rural places has declined while the population of people in urban places has increased. 500 worldwide metropolitan cities with more than a million people, more than 50 are in the united states: metropolitan places are a city with suburbs around it (baltimore to towson & Columbia: city- an incorporated municipality, as defined by local law (technique definition, city- a large, permanent human settlement (practical definition, urban- of, or pertaining to a city or town how to define urban" practically. Economic characteristics: significant number of non-farmers functional nature, does it have stuff that cities would have. Population density: amount of people per square mile in the united states, we use population density to determine if an area is urban, census tract- greater than 1000 people per square mile census designations (large to small) County tract: around 4,000 people in a tract. Block group: around 1500 people in a block group.
