What is the meaning of political economy in modern times the relationship between economics and politics is a reciprocal one. Economics largely determines the framework of economic activity. Economic processes tend to redistribute power and wealth. Establishment of an order of relations or structure. Relationship between economics and politics translates into the relationship between wealth and power. Liberalism regards politics and economy is as relatively separable an autonomous spheres of activities. There is a basic harmony between true national interest and cosmopolitan economic interest. Marxism refers the radical critique of capitalism; determines politics and political structure. Mercantilism the state of the economy and it"s interests. Wwii allies built multilateral liberal economic institutions. Goals: avoid protectionism (opposite of mercantilism ideas, increase free trade, insurance against economic collapse, rebuild europe. Bretton woods conference, 1944, bretton woods, new hampshire. Global economic government to protect against another war. 3: global agreement on tariffs and trade (gatt) -> world trade organization (wto) (1994)
