Mother tongue by amy tang: explain the pun in the title of tan"s essay. In this passage, amy"s mother basically had her own language that only amy and the rest of her family were able to understand. She was speaking broken english but to everyone else, she was basically speaking a different language that was difficult to understand. The title, mother tongue , is a pun because it means mother"s language and the narrator"s mother essentially had her own. Amy believed that her mother"s english reflected the quality of what she had to say. She believed that when her mother would say something incorrectly or imperfectly, her thoughts were then incorrect or imperfect. Amy being a writer, a person who has always loved language, and having a mother who has limitation with the english language made. Amy feel disappointed/ashamed when she was in public.
