Quantitative- information about the social world that is in numbers (or can be converted into numbers) Experiment- cause and effect under controlled conditions. Experimental (exposed to the iv) vs. control group (not given iv) Quasi-experiment- common in sociology, subjects are not randomly assigned. Began racial prejudice where there wasn"t before. Survey- subjects respond to series of statements in questionnaire/interview. Most commonly used research method in sociology. However, relies on samples (subset of the population), allows generalization, some error. Different than polls (usually just one question) Participant observation-observe while joining in on routine activity (ethnography) Erving goffman (asylums, 1961) posed at recreational assistant at a mental hospital, labeling theory: label of mental illness is a social role that people have to learn. Try to see things from subject"s pov. Probing- follow up questions to get deeper than initial answers. Variable- concept whose value changes from case to case. Dv, and measure iv for individuals with the same value of control.
