Racial/ethnic pluralism: pluralism is represented by the ideal of the u. s. as a salad bowl": a great mixture of different cultures where each culture retains its own identity and yet adds to the flavor of the whole. (pg. Racial/ethnic assimilation: assimilation describes the process by which a minority individual or group gives up its own identity by taking on the characteristics of the dominant culture. (pg. 239: assimilation is antithetical to the salad bowl". Measuring assimilation: sociologists measure the degree to which immigrants have assimilated to a new culture with four benchmarks, socioeconomic status, spatial concentration, language assimilation, intermarriage. The social construction of race: 2 ways in which race is considered to be socially constructed , no biological/genetic differences between people who are classified in different racial groups. If racial categories reflected real differences, wouldn"t there be bio/genetic differences: racial categories have changed over time, suggesting that they do not reflect real differences.
