10­11­12 • Chromatin: used to package DNA into chromosomes in eukaryotic cells • Nucleosomes + other DNA packaging proteins = chromatin • Chromosome = contiguous stretch of chromatin • Chromosomes are visible only during a brief time in the life of a cell (the cell  cycle), when they condense, align themselves, and are separated into two new  cells o Mitosis • Interphase o G1, S and G2 o Copying of DNA o Preparation for cell division • Mitosis o Separate copied DNA o Cell division • To answer: when during eukaryotic cell division does DNA synthesis occur? o Pulse­Chase with radioactive thymidine o Conclusion: chromosomes are replicated during interphase or
