December 3, 2013 Study the different types of blots and make sure I have them straight Northern blot – shows RNA  Western blot – technique for detecting specific antigens separated by electrophoresis by use of  labeled antibodies (exploits the principle of antibodies binding specifically to antigens in  biological tissues) • Uses a different, thin, porous gel that is situated vertically Producing extra copies of the purple genes  ▯get a white flower  ▯experiment  ▯protein is not  expressed • Called their result “co­suppression” because suppressed expression of both the  endogenous gene and transgene (it suppresses the stuff you put in, in addition to the stuff  that’s already there) • Gene that is going to make the protein  ▯“sense” gene  • Antisense strand is complementary to the sense strand (binds to it to suppress it because  the body thinks the extra protein gene copies is a virus) • Antisense  ▯wildtype • Sense  ▯wildtype • Double stranded DNA  ▯mutant  Post­transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS) is mediated by double stranded RNA (RNA  interference)  RNAi (RNA interference) • Shown to occur in many organisms • Protect genome from some viruses • Important for regulating gene expression • New tool to learn how genes work (knock out) • dsRNA is more ef
