Bio 14 Lecture Notes 3 There can be a lot of variation among what is expressed from the genotype and what is  seen in the phenotype • Big muscles because you worked out a lot Variation • Discrete o Usually phenotype dealing with one or two loci that have a large effect on  the phenotype • Quantitative o Product of many loci – no knowledge of how many alleles o Lots of loci each with a small effect o Intermediates could be homozygous or heterozygous or mixture  Never possible to know what the underlying genotype mixture is Different levels of variation • For phenotypes, environmental conditions determine what is visible or not o If under operating natural selection, there must be phenotypic selection o I.E. everyone needs vitamin C, but if you need a certain supplement then  that would become visible during a shortage • Genotype allele combination that determines phenotype at that locus, and shows  that recessive alleles that are invisible • These two ^ apply to individuals o But when you think about it in terms of a population, allele frequency
