Flow of matter - tightly linked to flow of energy. Exception: venus flytrap, doesn"t get much energy from the fly it catches. Most animals get nitrogen in proteins: without nitrogen, amino acids, body couldn"t make/repair proteins. Flows from high to low concentrations: no energy needed to drive flows between storage pools. Energy is needed: every biogeochemical cycle must have at least one of these. 5 natural storage pools: atmosphere o o. *organisms limited by nitrogen probably have a relative shortage of proteins. Top source: fertilizer: also agriculture, fossil fuels, land clearing. Agricultural runoff: algae at surface take in oxygen. Cause removal of oxygen in oceans that was used to decompose algae. Running downhill: high concentrations to low concentrations. Causes high phosphorous levels in deep ocean. Eutrophication: high introduction of nutrients into environment, causing boom in microalgae. Cause fish die-off and dead zones: organisms deplete all the oxygen.
