Lecture 18 Reasons for European Integration • French nationalism o Don’t want Germany to be a major power again • Economic Efficiency o Lower barriers to trade aren’t good for manufactures o Import substitution  Instead of importing goods, make your own and make higher tariffs o Local market becomes saturated and so lower tariffs are needed • Interests of upper­class o Understand that there needs to be prevention from WWI or WWII from  happening again Monet and Degaulle • Similar but ultimately different • Maximize French interests and keep British out • Degaulle o Very strict and against US o Use European movement to shut out US and USSR • Floating rate regime o All currency is being floated around o After WWII, everyone was struggling and trying to recover o Wanted to undermine and threaten American economic hegemony  Wanted to lower tariffs and work out things with agriculture • Not successful o Western European nations no longer need to go through European Integration  They were “done”  60­80s was a dark period for Europe  Mid­1980s there was a revival of integration  New membership to more nations in Europe and the British colonies  British wanted to get rid of all barriers and economic unity  Only qualified regions can make decisions for nation o SEU – 1986  Sparked EU  Renewed economic sense of urgency  Intensified fear of being left alone by US and Japan  France moved from anti­integration to pro­integration • Development of European ideas to a post­material society o Issues really change Maastricht Treaty 1991 • Euro replaces national currency in all nations • E
