10­18­12 • Emotions arise when an individual attends to a situation and sees it as relevant to  his or her goals o Multifaceted, whole body phenomena that involve loosely coupled  changes in the domains of subjective experience, behavior, and central  peripheral physiology • Basic emotions o Joy o Fear o Anger o Sadness o Surprise o Disgust o Interest o Acceptance o Some believe these are universal  They are recognized cross­culturally  Most are universally represented in words across different  languages o Display rules  Which emotions are okay to display • People are best at recognizing happiness • In­group advantage: we are better at recognizing facial expressions of emotions in  people from our own race o His effect is smaller for people with greater cross­cultural exposure o Suggests familiarity may be one reason • Functions of expressive behavior o Communication  Serve as signals to others whether to approach or withdraw o Facial feedback hypothesis  Changes in facial expression ca
